The Hunan Geology and Mineral Resources Bureau was established in 1952 and is a public institution directly under the control of the People's Government of Hunan Province. For the past 50 years it has been responsible for uncovering and mapping the vast geological and mineral resources of the province.
The Bureau has more than 17,500 members, with nearly 8,000 employees in the field, and capital of more than 9 billion Yuan.
Its main business scope is mineral geological prospecting, fundamental geology research, geophysical and geochemical prospecting, hydrogeology, engineering geology, topographical survey, geological hazard control design, groundwork and fundamental engineering, industrial and civil construction, mineral, rock and soil testing, mineral resources development and mineral products processing.
Hunan Province holds large deposits of gold and silver and other mineral resources such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, bismuth, antimony, lead and zinc. It is also rich in non-metallic minerals such as barite, fluorite, graphite, gypsum, rock salt, mirabilite, sepiolite and wollastonite.
